Music and songs for Irish wakes and funerals

What I do and how I can help

I've been performing at Irish funerals and wakes for many years.

Here's a video of samplers of the most requested songs that I perform solo, with an acoustic guitar, at funeral services and gravesides. It includes; The Fields of Athenry, How Great Thou Art, I Watch the Sunrise, Jealous of the Angels and other favourites.

It's always a great honour to be asked to take part in a farewell to a loved one from our great Irish community, once so enormous in this country. Often they are the people who came here in their droves in the 1950's an 1960's just like my own family, to make a better life for themselves and their children.

Here's the title track from one of my recent albums, 'Jealous of the Angels', I was asked to sing this beautiful song at a funeral last year and fell in love with it immediately. The song and the album are available on Itunes, Spotify, Amazon, etc.

It's a popular option with mourners to have that 'special Irish song' (or two) associated with the deceased, performed at the service.

I sing and accompany myself on guitar with this option and I'm happy to advise on possible songs where required.

The most popular songs tend to be Irish Ballads such as; 'Danny Boy', and 'The Fields of Athenry', along with other similar old time favourites.

Often a song from the County of the deceased is also sung.

As well as performing solo I can also provide a duo option with a flute player, uilleann piper, banjo player and or accordionist at Wakes after the service.

I often work with an excellent Uilleann Piper at Irish Funeral Services, playing laments such as 'The Coolin', (click below to hear) who also performs along with me when also booked for the Wake afterwards.

Previous clients feedback

"Hello Sean and happy Easter to you. Just a short note to say a huge thank you for performing at our mum's funeral. You were so professional from the first point of contact and made life very easy for us when that really mattered. Your performance was exactly what we wanted and set the tone beautifully for the service. All our relatives and friends, many of whom had flown in from Ireland, commented on the beautiful music. We would certainly not hesitate to recommend you. Many thanks again and all the best Sean.

"Sorry for the late reply Sean. You and your band made my late mothers funeral the most wonderful occasion I wanted it to be. Without you it would have been nice, but you added a very special dynamic. I will be booking you again Sean but for a happier occasion. Take care and thanks".

"Sean, sorry for the delay in sending this but just wanted to thank you and the lads for putting on such an amazing set. The songs and music by the graveside will never be forgotten. You do what you do well so thank you so much. No hesitations in recommending to friends and family Thank you again".

"Hi Sean, thanks for the performance on Wednesday at moms funeral. You did a great set and everyone loved it. The only one problem was we didn't want you to stop! We carried on for a good while after and had as good time as anyone can at a funeral. Also enjoyed the few conversations we had about our history, parents, etc. Thanks again"-

"Sean - all my family and I would like you to know and for you to pass on to the band that they were fantastic at my mother's wake yesterday - they made it the perfect send off for her for her family and friends all of whom have been steeped in the traditional music and the ballads and songs of Ireland - can't praise them enough - they made the day - thanks, and thanks again -"

"Hi Sean,

I just wanted to touch base and say thank you so much for all your efforts.

My mum would have been so happy at the way you got everyone together with your music.

All those there expressed how great a day you made it, making a sad occasion into a joyous one, which is what we wanted.

I have also passed on your details to various members of my friends and family so I guess it won't be to long until I hear you guys again.

So thank you again Sean from every one in the O'****** party.

God bless",

"Hi Sean,

May we first say how pleased we were with you're performance at my Dads funeral.

We were especially pleased with the song Mother Ireland "Come Home Paddy" that you learned for the day, it was one of my Dad's favourite songs. You helped to make a sad day very special.

All who attended commented on how good you were, we will track you down and come and see you in the future".

All the best,

Ken & Mairead.

Sean, I just wanted to say, sincere thanks to you guys for making the Wake on Friday a fantastic celebration for my Mum. You were the icing on the cake for us and we're very grateful! Also I hope Millwall have a good season.:-)

Cheers,

Kevin.
