I’ve long admired the Fureys, but nothing prepared me for the moment I first heard their version of my song—it stopped me in my tracks. A cherished memory, made even more powerful by the fact that I never pitched the song to anyone. I wrote it back in 1986 for my second album, ‘Jackeens & Culchies’. It appeared under the title ‘A Man of Our Times' on 'The Winds of Change' album. Hearing it for the first time, that was pure magic.

This version was produced by Liam Hurley and (producer of Grace with Jim McCann) I rewrote this version especially for Susan. Liam and Susan did a great job on it and this version has enjoyed more international radio plays than any other song of mine by a long chalk. It has been playlisted on BBC radio 2 on many occasions and the single release charted in Ireland.

My biggest single record sales royalty payout was from this album which sat high in the UK album charts for several months. It included a cover track of my first version of this song. I love Tony Allen's vocals and he did a lovely job on this one. The album went on to chart globally.

Charlie and the Bhoys are a highly popular Scottish based act who certainly know how to get the audience rocking with their fine renditions of Irish rebel songs. As a songwriter I'm always flattered when any act either performs one of my songs or goes to the trouble to record one.
